“Unexpectedly rewarding” – Gary’s story
Gary Hill is a new support worker in one of our houses in Crewkerne, which supports eight people. For years, he was running his own business selling print cartridges and toners but couldn’t compete with the likes of eBay and Amazon, which were selling them cheaper that it cost for him to post them!
He really wanted a change of direction and applied for several care roles, where he managed to get interviews for all of them. He got offered two of the jobs but was really holding out for this role, which he fortunately got.
Gary said: “I had never done any care work before this role, apart from looking after my mum who has dementia and is now in residential care. This has helped as one of the people we support has dementia and I often accompany him to hospital.”
He continued: “The people I support give me so much back; they are a joy to be around and I never expected that – this job makes you feel really special. My wife says she can’t call me a grumpy old man anymore; the change in me has been amazing!”
