Green-fingered student volunteers lend a hand

Health and social care students at Strode College have been volunteering in the garden at Apple Tree Court.

The new development in Street enables people we support to have more independence and to live the life they choose. The garden was a blank canvas so there was plenty of scope for the students to get to work.

The students have been using free pallet collars from a gym installer company and upcycling them to make raised beds. The people who live there have enjoyed helping them by choosing plants, and telling them where to plant them!

They have now finished a number of raised beds in memory of people we support who have passed away and are building 13 more for the people who currently live there. Residents are looking forward to buying plants and accessories for their own little garden plot.

Sweet Acres Nursery in Glastonbury has donated herbs and plants with an interesting texture for a sensory area.

Some of the student volunteers will return later this year for work placements at Apple Tree Court.
