“I was impressed that the people being supported had so many choices.”
Laina, a 16 year old student at Bridgwater College in Somerset, has been volunteering at the Supported Living service, Croftlands, in Bridgwater.
Laina, who’s studying Health & Social Care Level 2, shadowed the team at Croftlands and was involved in every aspect of the job role including attending training, fire evacuations and meetings.
She supported people to go on shopping trips, visit the Strawberry Club and pubs and cafés.
Laina said: “I was impressed that the people being supported had so many choices. People could say I want to go here or there and the staff would make it happen. I went with them to these clubs and they seemed really joyful and they would look forward to the next visit.”
Mandy Pope, the Locality Manager said: “Laina worked well within the team and attended a training session which helped to give her an insight into the role. We’re now hoping to take on another student next term.”
Laina has found her volunteering experience “amazing and helpful” and recommends others give it a go too!
