Discovery invests in ‘Books Beyond Words’
As part of our ongoing commitment to allow individuals to express themselves in the manner they choose, Discovery has purchased a number of licences from ‘Beyond Words’, who provide books and training to support people who find pictures easier to understand than words. Whether supporting somebody with a learning disability or communication difficulty, these resources empower people through pictures.
The Books Beyond Words app helps by telling stories in pictures. Each Book Beyond Words narrative gives support workers and the person they support the chance to work together and explore different types of situations, such as:
- everyday opportunities and experiences
- things that are about to happen, like going to hospital
- life decisions, like having a relationship.
People who are unable to read or who don’t like written words are often very good at reading pictures. Books Beyond Words all tell a story, but they also allow the people we support to tell their own story – the one they see in the pictures. This can give a lot of insight into their inner world and their understanding of situations.
